"DIE, JERRY, DIE"

Here we have a very cool and somewhat rare, comp of some old Connecticut hardcore singles on Anthrax Records. It starts off with the classic C.I.A. God Guts, and Guns single. If you would like to know more about C.I.A. click HERE . Next up is Lost Generation, from their Never Work single. You can check them out on the Incas Records Page. After that is the Violent Children self titled single. Most of the info on them out there is surrounds Ray Cappo. You can check him out Here . Next is The Vatican Commandos second single; the Just a frisbee E.P. you can check out their story HERE . And rounding out the group is the classic Reflex From Pain Black and White single. There's many postings of this single with info on other blogs far Superior to this one you can check out. Individually, these records are pretty rare and pricey, however this comp ties them up in a nice little bow for you. I own three out of the five singles. Violent Children never did much for me, and Ive never come across The Lost Generation single. I sold a copy of the Black and White single over 10 years ago, but I don't remember what I got for it. These are numbered to 400, mines #53.

CITY LIGHTS (BLACKOUT 12" EP)

This is one of those records that grows on you with every listen. She wants to be sure is definitely the stand out track but, if you give it a chance, there's a great Zombies cover as well as three other solid pop tunes. City Lights were a four piece that formed in the late 1970's around the Los Angles area. The Back Cover gives a Kagel Canyon mailing address. They released one single("Action/Back Off Babe") and this EP ("Blackout"). I found very little info on this band but Donnie Barren (Guitar,Vocals) has a website and a cd for sale consisting of a solo single from 1983 "I Love My Cat's Meow/Falling In Love" and a bunch of his solo tracks that were never released. Check it out HERE! The rest of the band consisted of: George Elliis (vocals, keyboards, Guitar),Kevin McCarley (vocals, Bass), and Bruce Knight (Drums). Please share, if anyone has any info on these guys.

THE JAGS (WOMAN'S WORLD SINGLE)

I think at one time or another I've had just about every Jags record. This is my favorite of the bunch. Most of their records are at least decent, normally inexpensive, and pretty easy to find. So if you like this, it should be easily obtainable. This info is from Allmusic ; The Jags were formed in 1978 by the Yorkshire-based songwriting team of Nick Watkins (vocals) and John "Twink" Adler (guitar), with Steve Prudence (bass) and Alex Baird (drums). In July of 1978, they signed to Island Records and released a promising four-track EP. Their debut LP in 1980, Evening Standards, included the memorable, though highly derivative, "Back of My Hand," which had reached the U.K. Top 40 the previous fall. The follow-up, "Woman's World" barely scraped its way on to the charts. Though Evening Standards featured a really solid set of punchy power pop songs, critics focused instead on Watkins' Costello-like delivery, writing the band off as merely mimics. As steam ran out of the power pop craze, the band attempted to change their sound a bit. 1981's No Tie Like the Present featured a slightly new direction, but it was generally overlooked. By 1982, the Jags had disbanded for good.

THE SLICKEE BOYS (GOTTA TELL ME WHY)

The Slickee Boys are one of my all time favorite bands. I think this is their third release, and my favorite, of their singles. It's got three great originals, and a great cover of the Downliners Sect tune Glendora. Their LP'S are awesome as well. Once again, a criminally underrated band. Most of this info is from Wikipedia. The Slickee Boys were from the Washington D.C. area, they were founded in the mid-1970s by guitarists Kim Kane and Marshall Keith, with Kane as principal songwriter, and featured Martha Hull on vocals. The band released its first EP, "Hot and Cool", in 1976 — an event documented by members of the new wave community as the third DIY new wave record ever recorded. In 1978 Mark Noone replaced Hull as the singer, with the band benefitting from Noone's showmanship as well as his songwriting. In 1983, a music video for their song "When I Go to the Beach" placed second in MTV's Basement Tapes competition. This resulted in the video being shown regularly as well as garnering the band the distinction of being first from the D.C. area to get airplay on the then-new video channel.
In 1988 after a short European Tour, founding member Kim Kane departed to focus on his band Date Bait. The band soldiered on with long-time roadie, John Hansen, taking over on rhythm guitar until they called it quits in 1991
Starting shortly after the break-up, reunion shows have taken place most years (as recently as December 2008 at the Ottobar in Baltimore, MD), usually the week between Christmas and New Years, with one show each in Baltimore and D.C. Frequently the line-up changes during the course of the show, with band members taking turns playing on different songs.

THE JOLT (YOU'RE COLD SINGLE)

The Jolt are the answer to a trivial trivia question: Which area punk band was the first to play in Glasgow, a city then known as a no-fly-zone for such acts? (They are said to have beaten Johnny & The Self Abusers to this distinction by just two nights.) The trio didn’t stick around long, however. Dispirited by their advancement (or lack thereof) in Scotland, The Jolt uprooted and headed to London in early 1977 to join an already bloated music scene in the capital. There, the trio gigged at the big punk circuits of the day, did a stint opening for The Jam and X-Ray Spex, and was snapped up by Polydor in August of ‘77. This is the first of four singles, and the most punk sounding one of the bunch. they released a very underrated album as well. The band split up after the release of their final single, Maybe Tonight in 1979.

THE NIPS (GABRIELLE SINGLE)

What we have here is the classic Punk two sider and third single from Londons The Nips. I don't believe this version ever had a picture sleeve. This info is from Wikipedia Formed in London in 1976 by female punk artist Shanne Bradley and are notable as Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan's first musical group.Initially consisting of vocalist/songwriter Shane MacGowan (known at the time as 'Shane O'Hooligan'), bassist/songwriter/original punk artist Shanne Bradley, guitarist/artist Roger Towndrow and drummer Arcane Vendetta; The Nipple Erectors performed their first gig at The Roxy Club Covent Garden. London in 1977. The band later released four singles and there was one bootleg live album between 1978 and 1981.Initially inspired by the The Stooges, The Nipple Erectors incorporated elements of rockabilly and 60's garage punk into their music.
Following the release of their first single, "King of the Bop"/"Nervous Wreck", in June 1978, on Soho Records. The band renamed themselves The Nips and released the garage punk classic "All The Time in the World"/"Private Eye". By May 1979 the bands line up had changed to include Gavin "Fritz" Douglas, on guitar. The Power pop anthem, "Gabrielle" was released in November 1979, first on Soho Records, and then reissued on Chiswick Records. with John (Grinny ) Grinton (ex Skrewdriver) on drums. By the time of its release, Grinny had been replaced by Roger Travis Williams. Gavin Douglas' guitar playing on this record marked a change in the bands sound to a more melodic style. A live album, Only the End of the Beginning was released on Soho Records in 1980, from a recording made whilst on tour with the Purple Hearts. Two other live bootlegs have recently appeared, Live at The 101 Club and Live at the Hope and Anchor both recorded in late 1979.
In 1980 The Nips recorded a demo for Polydor Records at their studio in Bond Street. It was produced by Paul Weller. There were four songs recorded for this session, including "Happy Song" "Nobody to Love", "Ghost Town" and "Love To Make You Cry". The Line up for this recording was, Shane MacGowan-Vocals, Shanne Bradley-Bass, Gavin Douglas-Guitar and Mark Harrison (ex Bernie Tormé)-Drums. "Happy Song"/"Nobody to Love" was released as a single in October 1981, on Test Pressing Records. The Nips announced to the press that they were quitting after a last gig at London's Covent Garden Rock Garden on March 10, 1980. MacGowan and Bradley did reform the band later that year, albeit briefly. The line up included James Fearnley on guitar and Jon Moss on drums. This line up played a final gig at London's Music Machine with The Jam in December 1980. In 1981 Jon Moss joined up with Boy George to form Culture Club
During 1981 Bradley took the band in another direction away from the traditional rock band format to incorporate Greek,Cretan and Irish Roots /Folk music. The popular Irish folk and America folk song "Poor Paddy Works on the Railway" had previously formed part of their early live set with Guitarist Roger Towndrow. This line up included Macgowan and Bradley plus John Hasler (ex Madness) on standup snare drum and Scots/Irish Folk Fiddler David Rattray.Later that year Bradley decided to have a break from music. Shane Macgowan and John Hasler went on to play in Pogue Mahone, later shortened to The Pogues. In 1984 Shanne Bradley cofounded The Men They Couldn't Hang to play "The Alternative Country and Western Festival" on March 1984 at The Electric Ballroom in Camden, London
In 1987 Big Beat released a compilation on LP named Bops, Babes, Booze and Bovver which later released on CD as The Nips 'n' Nipple Erectors. It is a collection of both sides of the first three singles by the Nipple Erectors/Nips, as well as adding four outtakes: "So Pissed Off" and "Stavordale Rd, N5" (first issued on LP in 1987), and "Venus in Bother Boots" and "Fuss & Bother".
On 6 May 2008, The Nipple Erectors reformed, playing a somewhat secret gig at the 100 Club, Oxford Street, London. The line-up consisted of Shanne Bradley, Shane MacGowan, Eric Le Baton, and Fritz Douglas. Shanne's daughter Eucalypta sang backing vocals on the final number 'Gabrielle'.

THE DONKEYS (WHAT I WANT SINGLE)

Surprisingly there's not much info out there on these guy's. I thought for sure there would be. The Donkeys were from Wake feild, in the North Midlands U.K. They came together around 1979. This was their first single on the Manchester based Rhesus Records. It was later picked up by Derum Records where it went to #90 on the BBC Charts. Derum promised an Lp that never materialised. They also toured as a support group for Stiff Little Fingers. I think they released five singles in all, the last one, Listen To Your Radio (which if I had to pick would be my second favorite to this one) saw the band make a name change to the Donkees. They broke up some time shortly after that around 1981 or so. Neil Ferguson (lead guitar and vocals) also did some producing of such bands as The Two-Tone-Pinks and Chumbawamba. He later ended up playing with Chumbawamba as well. There's no real info on his brother Tony (guitar) or the rest of the band. As per usual if you have anything you would like to add please feel free.

THE JARS (TIME OF THE ASSASSINS SINGLE)

I took this info from the Jars Myspace. I trimmed it down quite a bit. A much more detailed story of the band is available there. Go check it out. Time Of The Assassins is such a classic track. If your not familiar with it I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The Jars were formed in 1978 out of the remnants of San Francisco’s Beauty Killers. All of the Jars had worked in the music industry in stores, as Djs, recording engineers, and all were rabid music collectors. They helped spearhead the Berkeley Punk/New Wave scene by playing at the International Café, Aitos Club, the Keystone, Berkeley High and various pizza parlors and frat parties. From ’78-81, The Jars were considered one of the top 3 Berkeley bands along with The Mondellos & The Young Adults and were playing all over the Bay Area at the Mabuhay Gardens, the Deaf Club, the Temple and the old Waldorf opening up for Roky Erickson, the Angry Samoans, Horslips, the Dickies, the FlaminGroovies, the Psychotic Pineapple, the Dead Kennedys, the Suspects, the Mutants and MX 80 to name but a few. The band did a 3 song EP for the young Subterranean label, “Start Rite Now”, “Psycho”, and “Electric 3rd Rail” with Mike Fox of The Tools/ Code of Honor producing. Released in the summer of 1980, this was the Jars’ first single. The record sold well in the Bay Area’s many hip record stores and got a lot of college radio airplay, and was featured on the then-emerging Maximum Rock & Roll show on KPFA. Electric 3rd Rail” was in the FabMab/KUSF Rotten Record chart Top Ten for 4 weeks and ended up at 54 on for the entire year of 1980, just behind Elvis Costello’s “High Fidelity” and ahead of “Too Much Pressure” by The Selector. On March 30th, 1981 the day Ronald Reagan was shot, a 2nd 45 was released on the Jars our own Universal label. Time Of The Assassins backed with an instrumental, Jar Wars . The single included a glorious pic sleeve designed by Grammy-winning artist and evil genius Hugh Brown. Both songs got a lot of college radio airplay all over the country, and the single rose to 2 on the Rotten Record Chart. In 1982, The Jars called it a day.
