Although this record is looked down on by some, I prefer it. I really like the in your face vocals , and a few of the tunes, that didn't make the cut like alienated make this a must.
Youth Brigade was formed in 1980, in Los Angeles amid the explosion of the Southern California punk scene by brothers Shawn, Mark, and Adam Stern. Shawn and Mark formed the Better Youth Organization in '79. They started off promoting shows, as they ran the infamous Godzilla's nightclub in 1981. They also started BYO Records in 1982, which has released 102 records to date.Youth Brigade played their first gig as a 3 piece(the bands first year of existence was as a 6 piece!) on New Year’s Eve ‘81/’82 at Godzilla’s. They were part of the big BYO extravaganza, “Youth Movement’82” at the Hollywood Palladium, where 3500 people showed up for an all L.A. bill in early February. Then they recorded 3 tracks for the first BYO record release, “Someone Got Their Head Kicked In”, and took off in their big yellow school bus on their first North American tour during summer of ‘82. 60 hours were documented on video tape to become the movie, "Another State of Mind"). After about 30 shows and several breakdowns (all documented on film!) they returned home to record their debut LP “Sound and Fury” (A premature version was rushed together before the tour but pressing was stopped at 800 copies as the band was not satisfied with the quality of the material or production.)

I Laughed, I Cried, I Nearly Just Shit My Pants!! Keep up the good work. I just found you. Don't have time to comment on them all but this is an awesome site with a great layout. If I could may I request more Pointed Sticks, Youth Brigade and the other single by the Reno Urban Assault if you have it? Oh yeah and the Effigies-Ink LP if you have it.
'Thanks' You!!
Hi,
Cheers for Sound and Fury. It was a favorite of mine when I first got into punk in the early '80s. My copy of the LP got warped beyond repair on a floor heater and I haven't heard this music since. Thanks for the upload.
I agree that this is the better version of the album. My friend came across a copy of it back in the early '90s for like $2 at a used record shop. The dudes in the band (who were sleeping over his house during their "Come Again" tour, were asking him if he wanted to part with it because at least one of them didn't even have a copy. Now, it's available again as a CD and a vinyl copy has been repressed as well (not sure if it's a boot or not).
Awesome blog you have!
Wow $2.00 is nuts! I didn't know that it had been rereleased. Some time ago, I saw a 7" that had some of the tracks but,I wasn't aware that it's been reissued in it's entirety. I had always read the band didn't like it.I'm glad your enjoying the site SFdoomed, Thanks for the comments!!
I have this original but no record play to play it on!!!! Have you come across The Brigade?
Do you mean the 12" with the white cover? I'm not sure if I still have that or not. I used to; I'll have to look. Thanks for the comment.
Is there any way you can re-upload this one?" I agree that this is one of the greatest punk records of all time!!!
Hi Kevin, you got it, Enjoy! If this is Kevin from 7 Seconds; The Crew was, (and still is) one of my favorite records when I was a kid. I got to see you live a couple of times and I thought you guys were great. Thanks for the music!
Thanks a bunch Frank, as usual an excellent music post here. This early version LP was my highest of pursuits (Holy Grail!)as a collector in the early days as the very first time I got drunk was a local bowling alley friend in spring break 9th grade I asked my mom if I could sleep over at my friends house who I just met and talking to her with a smuggled bottle of champagne he had me smuggle from our pool shed storage area by our garage but she didn't notic it in my shorts. So we went to his house during the sleepover before our usual video games at the bowling alley and played the later S & F record (my first punk I heard--next up on his basement record player was Crass - Christ the Album really blew me away!) and got my first drunk on...Oi! Many years later I finally got to talk to the Stearn boys play live in Mpls. after getting to know them as regulars at the Troubadour at shows a year I lived in L.A. for a job at a Japanese firm in the Valley and low and behold the after drink with boys before that show and filming for my old youtube channel (CorridorsofPower then Viacomclosedmedown) some songs and slam dancing also I bought this original on CD BUT it fucked up in my CD player so only heard it once...I guess the CD has lots of bonus material. So now I get a great VINYL RIP from you...I can't believe it! The best of the best and all the best!
Very cool story! I'm pretty sure my first exposure to punk was The Ramones, Rocket To Russia. My mom and dad were going through a divorce. I guess sowing some wild oats; my mom would have these party's during the day, while my dad was at work. Many of the young sluts and degenerates, from the neighborhood, along with a couple of my mom's younger sisters and brothers would be partying when I got home from school. At the time, I hated them but I came to be a big fan of allot of the music they'd be blasting. I would have never guessed, 36 years later I would still be listening, lol! I never new Youth Brigade released the first version on CD with bonus tracks, I'd really like to hear it. By the way, Do they owe us a living has always been one of my favorite Crass songs; your friend had great taste in music. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the LP, thank you for the comment!
Yes, I want to try to find that CD from 2006 or so and see what's on it and if it will play, sadly all my CD's sit by the wayside as I discover 10-20 new records I've been ripping weekly since 2008 for downunderground but am getting organized finally to the bottom of the stacks, the tapes and CD's in only a couple areas. Yeah, my older sister would go see Prince/Phones/Flamin' Oh's regularily in their little First Ave Club scene and I got her friends fake I.D. for my 'baptism' for the RHCP "Freaky Stylee Tour" off shoot of her interest in Funk at the time but she had Talking Heads, B-52's, Kurtis Blow, Terrible Ted Nugent with Wango Tango, and I got the rest like I said and off the weekly MRR radio shows. Our biggest bands to follow in Jr. High were Iron Cross, JFA, Minor Threat, 7 Seconds (yeah my first buy was the Crew when that came out and the awesome 7's were hard to find then, Misfits, Toy Dolls and Replacements. I discovered that Crass song you mention during one of many out of work times between engineering contracts and also really enjoy that heartfelt song and lived it. Just hit my 2 year anniversary at a long term position in my specialty now in Florida which has a pretty good scene. BTW since you appreciate that early Boston scene ever come by the early Flies singles?
Very rare but I love the band, they were neo-paisley era featuring an over-the-top Bob Dylan style singer which is a great formula in my book!
I have or had the All hung up single at one time. I looked and I couldn't find it. I guess it's possible I may have gotten rid of it, but I'm not sure. I'm like 99% sure I still have the Get Wise LP, but I'll have to look. Are you looking for something in particular?
Yeah Frank, I have the "Get Wise" LP and "Get Burned" the follow up EP. I have no idea what else they released to I am looking for it all. I know their was at least 1 single and looks like you confirmed that so thanks.
No problem, they had a 6 song EP called The Flies also, but I know I don't have that one.
There was a group from Boston called The Flies that had Nat Freedberg as the singer. He later went on to sing in The Titanics, The Satanics and The Upper Crust. All great bands. I would describe his voice as more like Bon Scott from AC/DC though, not so much Dylan.
Thanks for the info.
Thanks, buddy. Cheers from Brazil
