THE CORPSE GRINDERS (RITES 4 WHITES SINGLE)

The Corpse Grinders were formed by bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane and guitarist Rick Rivets, high school pals who founded the New York Dolls in 1970 or so (Rivets was subsequently replaced by Sylvain Sylvain before the Dolls really took off). After the Dolls, Rivets went on to form the Brats. The Corpse Grinders have been described as "primitive glam punk in the vein of early New York Dolls and the Voidoids; an essential chapter in the history of N.Y.C. punk rock" (All Music Guide) and "a trivial footnote to New York's new wave underground... a useless hard rock group" (Trouser Press).

maybe I'm nieve but I never really thought this was a racist record. I guess from the title I could see why you would think that.I always thought it was meant sarcasticly? I listened to the lyrics and all I got is someone who felt like they were being treated unfairly by the system based on the color of "his" skin. I couldn't find anything on the web where anyone was sure this was a racist record. Any time I found the question being asked it was always with a ?. Besides I mostly used this record for the cover. I felt it fit in with the Halloween theme. If it bothers everyone that much I can take it down.

After listening to it, I'm not sure about the attitude. You're right, it could be sarcastic. I'm not sure. In any case I guess I'm sensitive because unfortunately punk can can be the output of that kind of hate. Also, white people are almost never treated unfairly because of the colour of their skin, and when they are you kind of have to suck it up because we've been doing it to others in much more significant ways for much longer.

No problem, unfortunately, many venues of music have, and continue to be used a vehicles to spread hate.I dont think any skin color should be discriminated against based on their past, present, or future. If we ever start to look at things in that light we'll be heading in the right direction.

For sure. Thanks for posting this, if just for the dialogue.

I was into the early HC scene and there was always a lot of stuff floating around that, in this post Oprah Nazi world would seem really uncool now. The Meatmen, Mentors, White Pride...I always lumped this in with that stuff. Jokey and stupid, to be taken as seriously as Motorhead Lemmy's nazi pins or The Ramones' "Today Your Love". I there are idiots who take these things seriously, but there was time when you could get away with things like this and it wasn't a true statement of politics.

Great band and tunes regardless.

Best, Sascha

Thanks for the comment Sascha,I agree, I think people are way too sensitive these days.

there's a great story in "please kill me" about the dead boys. when they showed up wearing their nazi shit, their producer, Genya Raven (who was Jewish) threw them out of the studio because of their get-ups. The Dead Boys didn't understand that it was offensive.

I Haven't got a chance to read that book yet. One of these days I'll have to take the time to sit down and read it. Thanks Nazz

If I'm not mistaken, I think Skrewdriver covered Won't get fooled again, does that make the Who a white power band ?

If you read the words it's Rites not Rights and the 4 is how many members were in the band. Stuboy wrote the lyrics after he was turned down for unemployment and was playing on words. The Rites we used to do before a show have nothing to do with race but how many beers we drank before we went on stage. stupid song be it made us some money......

Hi Rick, thanks for the info. As you can see, I took a bit of flac when I posted this; quite a few years back now. Thanks for clearing things up. I never thought of it as a racist song. Take care and thanks for the comment!

Yes it had nothing to do with race but Stu's play on words. he was quite the character and was far from a racist. Just like Mental moron wasn't about people with mental problems but just another play on words. None of us were racist and judged people on an individual basis.
