The Peens (Four Song EP)

The Peens were a three piece from Erie, PA. I couldn't find anything about them, so I'm going to assume this is somewhat rare. Three out of the four tunes are kind of strange and quirky, however the song "Thrill Me" is an underrated late 70's style Punk smasher.

The Trend (Lucky Day Single)

The Trend were originally a four piece from Kennett, Missouri. John McMullan formed the band in 1979 while in High School; he was 16 at the time. Other than this single, they also released a LP titled "The Trend Is In"; as a five piece in 1982. The Trend disbanded in 1987 for many of the usual reasons. As is the case with mine, most copies of this record were sleeveless. I found a picture of an actual picture sleeve that I included with the download for you to check out.

The Kopterz (First Three Releases)

The Kopterz were a four piece from Portland Maine. They released a Single, a four song EP titled "The Kopterz", an Lp Titled "Dancin Disorder", and a final EP Titled "Twistin In The Wind", all on their own Broken Records Label before disbanding sometime around 1989. I've included their first Single and The Kopterz EP in their entirety. I chose my six favorite tracks from the LP and I can't say I've ever heard "Twistin In The Wind". In all, this should give you a good taste of what these guys were all about. I think you might still be able to buy the Lp , as well as their first EP; check HERE.

Charlie Pastorfield (Maybe We Have Changed EP)

 Here's a Great 4 song EP out of Charlottesville, Virginia. Charlie Pastorfield played with The Skip Castro Band, as well as The Gladstones and The Believers. This Solo effort seems to have been self released. I found another Solo release called "Scenario", from 1986 but I've never heard it.

Ingemar Bergman Troop were a three piece from Uppsala Sweden. From what I gather, they were actually the Poppier alter ego of a band called Kaipa. It looks as though they released three singles, ( this being the last) and a full length, all on the RCA label.

Aerial FX (First Two Singles)

Aerial FX were a Oxford based five piece that formed around 1980. They released three singles, (the first two represented here) and a full length titled, "Watching The Dance".
   Following the full length, they signed to EMI, however no further releases eventually lead to the bands end around 1986.
   In 2010 Other Voices Records release a LP titled "Same River Twice" which is a collection of various unreleased material.

The Radio Ghosts (Say Hello To The World Of Love EP)

The Radio Ghosts were a Scottish four piece that were around in the early eighties. I can't find much else about them except in 1982 they also released a mini LP titled "Handfuls Of Everything" that I've never heard. I like this record, especially the great Bass lines and choppy, jangly Guitar work on Author.

Bad Brains (Pay To Cum Single)

 This is an Essential early hardcore record from 1980 . If you follow this music I shouldn't have to tell you how great this is . Bad Brains was first founded as a jazz-fusion ensemble called Mind Power (1975), with singer Sid McCray, in the mold of bands such as Chick Corea's Return to Forever and John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. In 1977, McCray introduced the rest of the band, who were already interested in bands such as Black Sabbath, to punk rock, including the Dickies, the Dead Boys, and the Sex Pistols. Mind Power became obsessed with punk rock and changed their name to "Bad Brains", after the Ramones song "Bad Brain" but with the word "bad" in the sense of "powerful". Despite their burgeoning punk sound, the early Bad Brains also delved deep into reggae music. McCray left in the early days of the group's hardcore-punk era, and guitarist H.R. became the band's singer. In 1979, Bad Brains found themselves the subject of an unofficial ban among many Washington D.C. area clubs and performance venues (later addressed in their song, "Banned in D.C."). The band subsequently relocated to New York City.
Bad Brains broke up and reformed several times over the years, sometimes with different singers and/or drummers. The band's classic and current lineup is singer H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer, and drummer Earl Hudson, H.R.'s younger brother.

  What can you say about these guys... D.O.A. were one of the most influential Punk bands to come out of the early Canadian punk scene; I'm a huge fan. D.O.A were a Vancouver area three piece; that formed in 1978, from the ashes of the Skulls. If they're still around, (and I'm assuming they still are) they've spanned over 36 years, countless releases and lineups. If your interested in reading about the band, here's their Wikipedia Page.

Tommy Ramone, R.I.P.

I'm not always best at keeping up on the passing of musicians but I wanted to mention the unfortunate sad passing of Tommy Ramone. As I  may have said once a long time ago; The Ramones were one of my biggest influences as a kid. They were the gateway band that drew me to punk and underground music to begin with. It's hard to believe all the originals are now gone, all of them passing way too young. When I say originals, I mean that in a literal sense. Even though Marky may have missed the first three Lp's; he'll always be as much the Ramones drummer as Tommy was, and therefore, (in my mind anyways) an original.
In the beginning, Tommy was supposed to be The Ramones manager but ended up taking over drum duties when Joey moved to vocals. He remained their drummer from 1974 to 1978, playing on and co-producing their first three Lp's, as well as playing on the classic live LP, "It's Alive".
Tommy passed away July 11th, 2014 at his home from cancer, he was 65, R.I.P.

Here's a six piece from, (I'm guessing) the New York / New Jersey area. This appears to be their sole release and unfortunately, I can't find anything on the band. Lead singer, Vic Harrison previously released a great single with an outfit called Cheese. If you've never heard the single it's worth finding. That's all I got.

The Mod Frames (Anyone After You Single)

Here's the second, (and I'm guessing the final) single from The Mod Frames. Both records are totally worth owning. Anyone after you is super catchy 60's inspired powerpop, with great harmonies, hooks and hand claps, (what more could you want). I posted their first single a few years back and honestly, I haven't learned a whole lot more about the band than I knew then. However, here's a few things of interest. They seem to have been a five piece from the NYC area and Billy Altman, (Vocals and Guitar) has quite a resume. He's a Grammy-nominated critic, whose work has appeared in: The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Spin and Sound & Vision. He founded a music mag called Punk, back in the 60's, was longtime editor of Creem Magazine and a former curator, for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Fools face were a Springfield, MO based five piece that were around from the late 70’s, through the early 80’s. In all they released three full lengths and a couple of singles, (this being their first and my favorite) I’m not sure when it was released as there’s no date on the record, but the general consensus seems to be 1979. White Boy were a father son duo from Washington DC, that were around from 1977 to 1983. Mr. Ott, and Jake Whipp, were the only constants; the rest of the line up was somewhat of a revolving door throughout the existence of the band. Their first single, “Sagittarius Bumpersticker” was released in 77, and is credited as being one of the earliest punk records to come from DC area. White Boy’s recorded output, (as far as I know?) was four singles, (this being the third) and a 12” ep all on their own Doodley Squat Record Label.

The Great Invisibles EP

The Great Invisibles appear to have been a five piece from Jacksonville Beach, Florida. For me, "Walk Home" is the stand out track here; It's a great slice of driving Pop Punk with a Farfisa, Arp 2600, Synth. The record looks to have been self released and unfortunately the net yields little else about the band. I did find a page for Arvid Smith, you can check out below.

The Kids (Pop "N" Roll With The Kids)

Here's one of about half of a dozen bands (that I can think of anyway) that called themselves The Kids. These Kids appear to have been a four piece from San Antonio, Texas. This classic, self released, (I'm assuming) 10" slab of Powerpop euphoria; as far as I know, is their only release. I found a couple of mentions online that place this as being released in 1985; but I'm not sure because there's no date on the record.

Martin Newell is an English Musician, Author, Poet, that grew up in an Army family. This guy's body of work is mind numbingly extensive; so I'm not even going to try to capture it here.     The Monks were a London five piece, that started out as an English folk band called The Strawbs, in the late 60's. As the Monks they existed from around 1979 till 1982. During that time, they released at least four singles, and two LP's. Nice legs reached #19, on the UK Singles Charts. If your parched for knowledge, here's a few sites that may quench your thirst. As great as this record is; I'm surprised how little info regarding these guys is available. The record yields little; not even the band members names, anyone ?
 Shadowfax were a short lived London based outfit. To my knowledge, this was their only record; it was self-released on their own Risky records label. The single was only available at their gigs and via mail order from the band themselves. I have seen other records by a band, or bands of the same name; but I don't think it's the same band, but I could be wrong ? If this message board is accurate, sadly there's been allot of Death and tragedy involving a number of the band members, as well as people closely associated with the band.

The Slowguns were a short lived four piece from Stockport England. The band consisted brothers, Peter and David Daulby, Terry Podmore, and various drummers.Their first single, released in 1978, was "T.V. Movie" backed with "American HeartBeat". The single garnered praise from John Peel, and was voted joint record of the week with The Not Sensibles "I'm in Love with Margaret Thatcher" in the English music journal Sounds.
The second single "The Time Is Right for Us" backed by "My Karma" was poppier and less angular than their first outing but met with little success. Internal dissent within the group caused them to split in 1980. An abandoned Lp, is said to exist but has yet to come to light.

The Newtown Neurotics (Blitzkrieg Bop EP)

Formed in the English post-war "new town" of Harlow, Essex, the Newtown Neurotics produced a fine blend of pop and punk rock with a strong left-wing political slant. Formed in the spring of 1978, the group comprised Steve Drewett (vocals, guitars), Colin Dredd (bass, vocals) and Tiggy Barber (drums). "Hypocrite" (1979) and "When The Oil Runs Out" (1980) appeared on their own No Wonder label, after which Barber was replaced by Simon Lomond. The bands strong socialist rhetoric was apparent on their third single on the short-lived but impressive CNT label, "Kick Out The Tories", in May 1982, followed in December by an attack on Britain's "Licensing Hours". When CNT folded, the Newtown Neurotics moved to Razor Records for their debut album. Beggars Can Be Choosers was an entertaining yet pertinent mix of scathing observation and new wave power and was promoted on single by a cover of The Ramones "Blitzkrieg Bop". In November 1984 the band moved back to their No Wonder label for "Suzie Is A Heartbreaker" (again hinting at a Ramones connection), before the Neurotics dropped the "Newtown" from their name, signing to Jungle Records in the process. The first fruits of this contract emerged as Repercussions in 1985, showcasing a group that had lost none of its musical vigour or political evangelism. "Living With Unemployment" followed in 1986 (with the help of ranting comedian Porky The Poet and the rumbustious Attila), preceding Kickstarting A Backfiring Nation. The Neurotics turned up occasionally during the late 80s (with Is Your Washroom Breeding Bolsheviks?) while the new decade was celebrated with 45 Revolutions Per Minute, a singles compilation of the band's "twelve blazing rock anthems" from 1979-84. The band had actually broken up in October 1988 when bassist Colin Dredd contracted pleurisy, going on to play a series of astonishing farewell shows in Harlow with a stand-in bass player. Drewett and Mac went on to form the Unstoppable Beat.

Die Kreuzen (Cows And Beer EP)

Die Kreuzen was formed in mid-1981 by two refugees from Rockford, IL (vocalist Dan Kubinski and guitarist Brian Egeness) and two from Brookfield, WI (bassist Keith Brammer and drummer Erik Tunison). Their first recorded output was four songs on Noise magazine's Charred Remains cassette compilation, followed by three on The Master Tape compilation LP. This and the ensuing press in Milwaukee and (especially) elsewhere led to the release in late 1982 of a 7" six-song 45 on the Version Sound label, entitled Cows And Beer, the title being "an in-joke on peoples' preconceptions of life in Wisconsin". This proceeded to sell out two pressings of 1,000 apiece (and is incidentally a much sought-after collector's item), prompting them to undertake their first tour of the South and West Coast in the summer of 1983. Upon returning, they were greeted with the news that Touch And Go records wanted to release an album, which for various reasons did not appear until July 1984. This 21-song self-titled LP then proceeded to sell upwards of 13,000 copies in the U.S. and Europe (and is still selling today). The release was followed by two years of repeatedly touring the States and Canada and gradually (through word of mouth and press of all sorts) spreading their name everywhere. Gradually, also, their songs were changing, their sound evolving and maturing. This was exhibited on their second LP for Touch And Go, October File, released in May 1986 (12,000 and counting). Two more years of slow but steady songwriting and touring, helped along by positive critical response resulted in the release, in July 1988, of their third Touch And Go album Century Days. Progress, variety and melody are the key words here, adventurous songwriting accented by diverse production and outside help from horns without losing the band's trademark drive and excitement. Attractive packaging, multiple formats (11 song LP, 12 song cassette, 13 song CD), international distribution and increased airplay helped Century Days do very well indeed. After a great tour of Europe and the U.S. the band returned to the studio to record a new song entitled Gone Away, along with a version of Aerosmith's Season's Of Wither. This saw release in two formats: a limited edition (2,000) white vinyl 7" with deluxe foldout cross-shaped sleeve (Gone Away/Different Ways (Live)) and an extended play 12" and cassette (Gone Away & Seasons Of Wither/Stomp, Cool Breeze, Man In The Trees, Bitch Magnet, Number Three (all live)). After more extensive touring and various side projects (Keith played for Wreck, Dan performed in The Muckrakers, Impact Test 1990, War On The Saints and Chainfall. and both were in Boy Dirt Car. Dan and Brian even started a Cheap Trick tribute band called Chick Treat), the band flirted with some new record labels but eventually released their fourth LP for Touch And Go records in 1991, Cement. Of course, the band resumed touring in support of their new album. On April 1, 1992, Die Kreuzen disbanded amid much conflict when guitarist Brian Egeness decided to quit the band. "He had different things to do, a different agenda", Keith Brammer said. The remaining members formed a band entitled Chainfall, which included Nerve Twins and SODA member Charles Jordan on guitar. They also stayed busy with other projects (Keith Brammer played in the Carnival Stripppers while Dan Kubinski and Erik Tunison were in Fuckface). What are they up to now? At last report Erik Tunison had moved to Europe, Brian Egeness works as an engineer/producer in a recording studio, Keith Brammer plays in Crime And Judy and Dan Kubinski has a new band called Decapitado.

No Alternative was a San Francisco three piece that were around from the late 70's into the early Eighties. Sadly, the band's lofty reputation among Bay area punks never extended far beyond the borders of California. No Alternative's relative obscurity wasn't due to any lack of chops; if anything, the band's fast-and-furious aural assault and socially conscious lyrics showed deeper artistic influences and more intelligence than many of  their contemporaries.   The Modern Look were a four piece from Hartford, Connecticut, originally called The Look. They changed their name so not to conflict with a English group of the same name. As far as I could find, they only released this one single. Musically, I think this record has a British Mod/Pop feel to it. From what I've read the opinion was, it failed to capture the punch the band had live, but I think it's still a good record. This single comes with a cartoon comic book, which has a brief history of how they got together.

The Aircuts (Radioactivity Single)

Here's a great 2 sider from a Vancouver, Canada three piece, called The Aircuts. I couldn't find much info about the band, but what I did find suggests they formed in 1980, and this DIY effort was their only record. Radioactivity is a great Punk tune with funny lyrics; while the flip is catchy Powerpop with a bit of a 50's edge. The singer, has a British accent which I'm not sure is real or not.

The Decadents (Legends)

Here's a fairly rare and great single from the Los Angeles CA, area four piece, The Decadents. Hideaway Girl is top notch, 60's influenced Powerpop; while Runaway Train is a great hard driving Punk tune. After a lengthy internet search that basically came up empty; here's the few pieces of info I was able to find. Most mentions have the band hailing from Covina, CA. Being that Covina is pretty close to Los Angeles, that may or not be true? There appears to be two sleeve variations of this single, each with a different band photo on the front; (I'm not sure which one is more rare?). And last, they released an Lp in 1983 titled "Subliminal Hokum". unfortunately, that's all I got. As per usual, if anyone has any info to share, please feel free.

Here's a great single from Southern California's The Bings. They Formed in 1980, and were around till 1982.I think this may have been their only single, but I'm not sure. I don't believe it ever had a picture sleeve, at least I've never seen one. I read the Bings released a CD last year titled THE BINGS '81 LIVE, but I couldn't find anyplace I could buy one.

Swingers Resort (Rockets And Rose Single)

Swingers Resort were a three piece from Boston. I couldn't find allot of info on the band; but I'm going to take a guess they formed around 1980, and were around for at least a few years. I'm not sure; but this may have been their only single. I have however seen a more plain looking sleeve variation, (maybe a earlier press?). At some point original Bassist, B.C. Kagan left the band to pursue a Photography career; and was replaced by Mark Normand. After Swingers Resort; Drummer Tom Bull went on to play with The Outlets, and others.

The Bounce (So Excited Single)

Here's a cool little powerpop record with great female vocals. "UPDATE" I was recently contacted by Larry Lachmann, who was the Guitar player for the Bounce. He was kind enough to provide me with his recollection of the band, thanks Larry!!!
The keyboard player, Matty Hahn and the drummer Dave Hall were in a band called the Bees. David Johanssen recruited their bassist and guitarist for his band. I met Dave Hall at a club called Hurrah in NYC seeing a punk band "999". Dave and Matty were auditioning guitarists along with Barbara Homeyer on vocals, who was then Matty's girlfriend. (later they married). I got the job when I showed them a song I was working on. We played in Manhattan at Max's Kansas City, Great Gildersleeves, Hurrah and a few others whose names I don't remember. We played at a lot of places in jersey,as everyone but me was from there. Dave Hall acted as our booking agent from his office at JEM Records, which was an import record distributor. We played The Dirt Club often, The Meadowbrook, which was enormous and we actually managed to fill it up! Again there were many other clubs whose names I have forgotten! We played out fairly regularly for 4 years, opening for bigger acts also such as Squeeze and Billy Idol.
We put out the "So Excited" EP early on with the original lineup. Later we had a 12" EP "Things That Go Bounce In The Night" with our new bass player (Barbaras brother) and a rhythm guitarist was added.Band members were; Matty Hahn, (keys, vocals) Barbara Homever, (lead vocals) Steven Anthony, (Bass) Dave Hall, (drums) and Larry Lachmann (guitars).

The Blases (All Night Long Single + Bonus LP Tracks)

  The Blases were a New Jersey four piece that formed in 1979.They became a very popular live band; playing many of the NJ bars and clubs, as well as receiving allot of college radio airplay during the ‘80s through the ‘90s. Videos for the songs "You Don't Know Me", and "Time Walks Away", both were aired on MTV. A video for All Night Long appeared in a film titled "Rockin' Brunswick"; a movie that focused on the thriving ‘80s music scene. Sadly Bassist Paul "Rock" Verdon, who played on this, the bands first single died in a train accident, in 1985. An LP Titled "The Blases" was released in 1989, on the Permanent Rave Record Label. I included a few tracks from it with the post. I'm really not sure if The Blases released anything else. I found This webpage, that links up to their videos.
